Nuit Blanche 2026

On the occasion of the Nuit Blanche 2026, artist Mathild Clerc-Verhoeven invests the galleries of the Sewer Museum to present Membrane Urbaine. An installation inspired by the cleaning tools used in the Parisian sewers : no external motor is used – the machines are activated by hydraulic energy and human action. It consists of several works :

  • A gutter 15 meters long and suspended from the ceiling. Its attachment points can be manipulated from the ground in order to raise or lower it and move a ball that is inside. The gutter is woven from carbon fiber.
  • A weaving of 3 meters x 9 meters in carbon fiber exposed under the Alma vault. The work is suspended on several ropes whose ends are connected to a wheel fixed to the wall. Visitors can handle the installation by turning the wheel.
  • A wheel made of wood and carbon fiber suspended above the current.

The whole is accompanied by a soundscape made up of the voices of the sewer workers. A text by the writer Jasper Coppes proposes a narrative framework that highlights the different dimensions addressed : the lived experience of the sewer workers, feedback mechanisms, the flow of fluids and information.
